when i started as DTP operator 10yrs back in an AD agency my art director was working with airbrush. he did not like me doing it on photoshop :)
But its really amazing to see him working with airbrush. after seeing it i learned use photoshop more effectively.

@james,
Interesting thoughts. I agree with you {if I understand what you are really getting at}. There are somethings that the computer helps us do better–I won't deny that. Let's see Cassandre design a web page without a computer. ;)

@DesignInformer
I agree with you on that one. But you also have to keep in mind that the work that some of these artists were doing in their time was considered to by distasteful. Just a thought.

@Kylie
Great to see your comment here! Mmm. Tootsie Rolls. It would be really cool to see those original designs.

Thanks all, for your great comments.

My great-grandfather was a graphic artist in the early 1900s. He designed the original tootsie roll wrapper without a computer. Some of the prints my family still has are amazing, I cannot believe the time involved though!

Man, these designs must have taken sooooo long to make. I'm so thankful for the tools that we have today. It just makes life so much easier, but at the same time, because of all the tools accessible to everyone, lot of people are claiming to be designers nowadays, even though they have no design skills whatsoever.

The Use Spades not Ships poster is a nice, clever idea!

A few of these would have been airbrushed.
